Golfers Elbow TOPAZ Radio Ablation
Aim:
To alleviate pain due to Golfers Elbow
Pain classically felt over bone on inside of elbow down in to forearm
Worse on grasping/gripping
Symptoms related to tendon degeneration- over use/ age related changes/genetics
Restrictions:
NO NON STEROIDAL ANTI INFLAMATORIES FOR 8 WEEKS
Surgery type:
Open
Anaesthetic:
General (asleep) usually with a nerve block
Objective:
Small incision over inside of elbow
Common flexor tendon origin identified
Radio Ablation (TOPAZ) wand applied to tendon 20 times
Wand excites an inflammatory response in local area of the tendon
New blood vessels and inflammation can ‘heal’ degeneration within the tendon
NOT guaranteed outcome- 33% cured, 33% better but not perfect, 33% NO improvement
Duration:
20-30 minutes
Scars:
1 on inside of elbow- approx. 3-4cm
Sling:
2-3 days depending on pain
Thick bandage on elbow 10-14 days
Sports:
6 weeks- swimming
3 months- racquet sports, weights at gym (sooner if symptoms settle)
Work:
Sedentary jobs: 1-2 weeks
Manual jobs: 4-6 weeks as pain allows
Driving:
7-10 days as able with dressing
